KESC Cherry Bowl Hall of Fame Members

In 1999, to mark the 40th anniversary of Cherry Bowl competition, the participating clubs decided to honor those individuals who have contributed so much by their swimming accomplishments, coaching skills, organizational talents, and commitment of time. Through their commitment, swimming in Cherry Hill has become a great sports success story and source of community pride. We congratulate the KESC Hall of Fame members and thank them for their years of dedication to the sport and the community.

Inductee:

Mary Beth Neiman & Bob Mangels

Inducted:

2006

Contribution:

Mary Beth Neiman started swimming at Tavistock Swim Club when it first opened. She moved to Indiana in 1960 and swam for the Devon Swim Team. When her family moved back to Cherry Hill in 1964, she ended her competitive swim career since neither Charleston Swim Club nor Camden Catholic had a swim team at that time. Mary Beth became involved in competitive swimming as a parent after she was married, settled in Kingston, and had her two children: Jackie and Mark. She was a pep rally mom and in charge of special events in the early years. She ultimately became Aquatics Director and spent 10 years running the Kingston Swim Team. During that time, Kingston moved up to "B" division after 17 years of being in "C" division, went to "A" division for a few years, and won Cherry Bowl three years in a row. Her service culminated in the very successful 2004 Cherry Bowl that KESC hosted. Mary Beth thanks the Aquatics Committee for this nomination and for their tireless effort throughout the years; Coach Gavin Quinn - who made her job easy; and all the Seals who have touched her heart. She would like to accept this award in honor of her late husband Jim, who shared with her the love of this sport and made so much of what she did possible.

Robert Mangels has been a member of KESC since the summer of 1959. He and his family have always been active members. Bob has served on the swim club's board for the last 17 years. He has been the board President for the past 11 years. But most recently, he has served as the chair of the new building committee. This summer, the Kingston Swim Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Our main building was in desperate need of repair, and without Bob's help and leadership, the swim club would have never had the ability to organize the construction of our new building. Bob would like to thank the committee members who helped him through this past year. The swim club thanks Bob for all his hard work and dedication to the new building, for without him, it would not have been possible.

Mike Schaffhauser

Inducted:

2005

Contribution:

Mike's love for competitive swimming started decades ago as a young member of the Philadelphia Vespers Swim Club. His involvement continued as a camp counselor in his home town of Medford Lakes. The Schaffhausers (Mike, Sue, Michelle, and Dana) joined Kingston Swim Club in 1985. They immediately joined the ranks as swim team parents and swimmers.

Mike, an electrician, has made significant contributions to the club. He served on the KESC Board for many years as Director of Operations and later as Director of Buildings and Grounds. He also contributed endless hours as chairperson of Buildings and Grounds for the 1991 Tri-County, 1992 Cherry Bowl, and 2004 Cherry Bowl Championships held at Kingston. We all fondly remember his picture in the Courier Post placing the Cherry Hill Swim Club flags atop the pump house roof in 1992. Mike's work for the team did not stop when his daughters graduated. He remained on the Aquatics committee as the food manager from 1994 to 2001. He ran the swim team food concession for all home meets. Club members and visitors alike raved about his great menu and fresh cooked foods.

The Board of Directors honored Mike for his outstanding service to Kingston Pool in 1998. In 2001, Mike was given an award by the Kingston Swim Team in recognition of his service, dedication, and commitment. Kingston Swim Club is now proud to honor Mike as our 2005 inductee to the Cherry Bowl Hall of Fame.

Rich Bubser & Rich Hoffmann

Inducted:

2004

Contribution:

Rich Bubser and Rich Hoffmann served as co-chair of Cherry Bowl 2004 held at KESC.

Rich Bubser has lived in Cherry Hill all his life and swam at Barclay Farm.  He has been a member of Kingston's Board of Directors for seven years and has spent eleven years being the swim team's "tent-man" and "grill-man" as well as a timer.  He lives with his wife Kathy and sons Ryan and Tim.

Rich Hoffmann has been a member of Kingston's Board of Directors for seven years, serving as President for five years, during which time he oversaw the replacement of the wading pool and reconstruction of the main pool.  He served for three years as Treasurer of the Greater Kingston Civic Association and currently Treasurer of the swim team.  He has also coached at St. Peter Celestine for ten years.  He lives with his wife Judy and daughters Katelyn and Kristin.

It is through their unceasing time and effort that Kingston Swim Club is what it is today.

Inductee:

Bob Thorpe

Inducted:

2003

Contribution:

Bob Thorpe and his family started their involvement with the Kingston Swim Team in 1983 when his oldest daughter, Adrienne, started swimming as an 8 and under and continued until his youngest daughter, Carolyn, graduated in 1996. During that time he served on the club board as membership chair for two years and most importantly as swim team chair for eight years. He served as Tri-County rep for 8 years and oversaw both a successful Cherry Bowl and a great old-fashioned "outdoor" Tri-County championship at Kingston. Bob served as Vice President of Tri-County for two years and then as Treasurer for his last two years on the board. Bob has retired from teaching and coaching the golf team at Shawnee High School after 34 years. His wife, Linda, worked side-by-side with Bob throughout those years with the swim team.

Inductee:

Teri Querbin Skelly

Inducted:

2002

Contribution:

Teri Querbin began her swimming career at age 5 when she joined the Kingston Swim Team. She competed in meets and in her first Tri-County competition at age 5, but she did not make the finals. During her time at Kingston, she would go on to hold Cherry Bowl and Tri-County records in every age group. At age 11, she won 6 first place medals at the Tri-County Championship, two individual swimming events, was part of both winning relay teams and won both the low board and high board diving events. Teri competed for the Jersey Wahoos Swim Club at the Junior and Senior National Championships. In 1975, she placed in the top two in the Mid-Atlantic Junior National Diving championships. In high school, she concentrated solely on swimming and swam for her high school (Cherry Hill West and The Peddie School) and at the college level at the University of Pennsylvania. She was captain of the women's swim team her senior years at Peddie and Penn. She was married in Ireland to Lynn Skelly, whom she met at college.

He served in many capacities including President, Vice President, and Treasurer of the club. He was a co-chairman of the Cherry Bowl committee when Kingston hosted the Cherry Bowl in 1979 and 1992. Inductee:

David Back

Inducted:

1999

Contribution:

Perhaps no swimmer has ever captured the hearts and affected the emotions of the Cherry Bowl swimming community as David Back. A dominant Kingston swimmer from 1985 to 1992, David's greatest swimming feats came in his teenage years. First place in the Cherry Bowl 13-14 100m freestyle, second in the 15-18 200m IM at 15, first in the 15-18 100m backstroke at 17, and first in the 15-18 100m freestyle at 18. David set and reset four individual and two relay records while at Kingston. A Mid-Atlantic and junior Olympic qualifier, David went to Lehigh University where his career and life were tragically cut short by a rare virus. His teammates closest to him recall that it was "his kindness and contagious love of life that inspired us all".
